Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman is an inspiring story about a young pair of friends are separated due to the colour of their skin.

Callum McGregor, a nought, is boy who grows up in a household where his mother works as a maid at the Hadley mansion. Persephone (Sephy) Mira Hadley daughter of a powerful cross, Kamal Hadley, grows up in this house being given everything she's ever needed but a such a young age all she wanted a friend, Callum. But what happens when the noughts are sent away? Will Callum and Sephy ever meet again?

Blackman's masterpiece is so powerful and striking that you won't want to put the book down. I found that the relationship between the two main characters develops into something that shocks the reader. The popular series lives up to it's potential after receiving a lot of attention while be having a multi-award-winning first book.

I recommend this novel to anyone that is interested in an alternate reality but still with a sense of familiarity. However, this is unsuitable for young readers as some of the events that take place are a bit too graphic.
